Case Study - Wellington College
Architectural canopy completes stunning sports pavilion at Wellington College. A stunning architectural canopy provided the finishing touches to a new, purpose built, sports pavilion at Wellington College in Crowthorne. This ultra modern pavilion, which complements the school's enviable reputation for sporting success, was designed and built by Beard to provide modern and flexible facilities for both players and spectators. The building includes home and visitor changing rooms, storage areas, rooms for officials and a kitchen, with a large function room and bar on the first floor. Bespoke terrace seating for 190 spectators plus a large balcony area above, looking out over the schools 'Bigside' rugby pitch, are protected from the elements beneath the overhanging canopy. Challenges & Solutions Incorporating the support needed for the steelwork and self-supporting canopy, within the structure of the building, set some initial challenges. The final structure is free-standing and four large concrete columns, hidden in the stucture, provide the structural support for the canopy masts. Erecting the steelwork and raising the canopy required some precision lifting and careful setting out to minimise stress and potential damage to the fabric. Delivering an innovative high quality building in time for the new rugby season was a key driver for the college and the construction team. Achieving strong integration and positive partnering between all parties, from day one, ensured objectives were met. “All of the Wellington community were most impressed with the building, both in the design, details and quality of the build. The team on site took ownership, formed partnerships, understood our needs and also applied the dedication, not only to consider the bigger picture, but to explore the details to produce a master piece for our sporting activities in the future .” |
