Makeover for student accommodation at Ruskin College and Christ Church 12th April 2010: Beard has won two important new refurbishment contracts, totalling more than £4 million, continuing the company’s long relationship with Oxford’s prestigious colleges and the wider education sector. In Headington work is due to start for Ruskin College on the refurbishment of existing student accommodation buildings, offices and classrooms plus site wide infrastructure and external works to improve overall facilities. The project encompasses work to four buildings, one of them listed, set in sensitive surroundings with many mature trees. All external works to bring in new services and hard landscaping will involve careful hand dug excavations to protect tree roots and an archaeological watching brief. Commenting on Beard’s selection, Ruskin College Principal, Professor Audrey Mullender said: “We are delighted that Beard has won the tender to undertake Phase 1 of our extensive redevelopment project. Beard understands how important this project is to the future of Ruskin College and that our adult ‘return to learn’ students need and deserve a state-of-the-art environment in which to study.” Closer to the city centre, work is commencing at Christ Church where Beard is also undertaking alterations and refurbishment of student accommodation and other facilities at Meadow Building, a prominent listed building, with a central tower, looking out over Christ Church Meadow. Work will involve internal alterations and refurbishment with new finishes throughout to improve student facilities as well as external renovation works on the building’s fabric including extensive stonework cleaning and repair, lead works, timber restoration and re-roofing. The whole building will be cocooned in a scaffold shell to provide access and protection to the structure during the project. “Involving listed buildings and sensitive surroundings both projects have similar priorities and a challenging programme of work with completion dates in September in time for the new academic year,” explained Beard Construction Director, John Youle. “Minimising disruption to students and the public, especially at Christ Church, which is high on the city tourist trail, and delivering improved facilities on time, will be key drivers for us.” |
