Darren Miller , Commercial Manager

Darren started his career as a trainee surveyor working for a regional contractor in his home town of Maidenhead, Berkshire. In the years that followed he gained experience working for national contractors before joining Beard in 2006.

Why do you like working for Beard?

It’s a growing company with potential for business and personal development. There is great team spirit and good IT.

What skills and knowledge do you need to do your job?

Understanding risk and opportunity and what makes a company profitable is central to my role. Encouraging teamwork and understanding what the staff need to develop, is also important to enhance performance.

What are the most enjoyable parts of your job?

I really enjoy delivering good news to the people that have made it happen on the ground. Creating an environment where people can develop and improve is also very satisfying.

If you could change one thing about the construction industry what would it be?

I would like to work closer with our customers and supply chain.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

At the weekend I enjoy spending time with my family which takes up most of my time. I am a keen golfer, but confess that I am not a good player!
