Pupils help with turf cutting as construction starts at Lydiard Millicent Primary Swindon, 13th September, 2010: Pupils and teachers at Lydiard Millicent CE Primary School celebrate as work starts in earnest on the construction of a brand new seven classroom school building to replace inefficient and aging facilities. The school, which relocated into temporary buildings in the grounds over the summer, is one of just two primary schools in Wiltshire to be rebuilt under the government capital funding programme. Headteacher Carol Dougill said: “We are extremely fortunate to have received the funding for the rebuild and really excited now that construction is underway. Beard, our construction partner, has been terrific over the summer setting up our temporary school buildings and playground, demolishing the old school and refurbishing our pre-school facilities. We could not have asked for a better team in all areas of the project.” The year long £3.8 million project, due for completion in August next year, will provide a modern up-to-date learning environment for children in Lydiard Millicent. To help with the school’s environmental credentials the new single storey building will incorporate a number of sustainable elements including areas of ‘green’ roofing, composite windows, ground source heat pumps for heating and rainwater harvesting tanks. A high percentage of materials will also be recycled. Marc Bayley, Construction Director Beard Swindon, said: “We are delighted to be involved with the project to build a new high quality education environment for the children of Lydiard Millicent, and to strengthen our ongoing relationship with Wiltshire Council. The team have been working hard over the summer to ensure the temporary and pre-school buildings are ready for the new term. As part of our ongoing collaborative partnership with the school, we will be setting up a safe viewing area so that pupils can watch their new school grow.” |
